Seniors Serving Seniors Association began as a result of a meeting of seniors' agency representatives brought together on the invitation of Gretchen Brewin, then Alderwoman, City of Victoria, to discuss the needs of senior citizens in the Victoria area. The discussion indicated that information services, seniors housing, advice bureau and coordination of services were not being met. This meeting resulted in a small committee being struck to plan for community conferences.

A conference was held at the end of March, 1981, under the auspices of new Horizons and the Extension Department of the University of Victoria. Approximately 150 seniors attended. This conference concluded
with the wholehearted support of a new organization for seniors. A week later an organizational meeting was held, an interim board comprised of seniors from the group was nominated and, a president was chosen. This was the beginning of what is now known as Seniors Serving Seniors Association.

July 3, 1981 Seniors Serving Seniors incorporates under the Society Act of BC.  

March, 1981 Conference is held at the Univerity of Victoria to discuss seniors' needs. Following the conference a meeting was organized and thus began Seniors Serving Seniors.  

April, 1982 A logo is chosen.  

Summer, 1983 A New Horizons rant is received and SSS offices & Information and Referral Centre are set up at the Institute of Gerontology at St. Joseph's School of Nursing. First SSS coordinator Barbara C. Smith is hired.  

Fall, 1983 Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly Committee forms to address elderly abuse concerns.  

October, 1984 Better Option for Life Development disbands and board members join SSS.  

February, 1985 A support group for separated & divorced people over 55 - "Turning Point Group" - is initiated and eventually joins with the international organization "Divorce Lifeline".  

June, 1985 Self Help Aids Shop opens at Victoria General Hospital, 841 Fairfield Road.  

January, 1986 A caregiver support group is initiated and results in the establishment of a Victoria office for the Family Caregivers Network.  

June, 1986 Long Term Care Citizens Association disbands and members join SSS.  

July, 1986 "Chat Linke" is started and provides friendly calls to isolated seniors.  

September, 1986 Offices move to the Fairfield Health Centre, 841 Fairfield Road.  

April, 1987 Senior Peer Counsellors complete training conducted by the Victoria Gerontology Association and become active with SSS.  

May, 1987 SSS participates with Bingo to secure funding.  

September, 1987 Friendly Visiting Program is initiated.  

February, 1988 The Lunch Club opens at Fairfield Health Centre to provide companionship and a nutritious meal.  

Fall, 1989 Social Advocacy Committee forms to address matters detrimental to the well-being and lifestyle of seniors.  

January, 1992 "Tea and Lively Conversation" is initiated to provide socialization for seniors in the area.  

Spring, 1994 SSS gets a new logo.  

June, 1994 SSS offices and Lunch Club relocate to Rose Manor at 857 Rupert Terrace.  

June, 1995 Information and Referral Service becomes computerized, moving the service into the 21st century.  

September, 1995 Seniors' Services Directory is published following 3 years work of the Regional Seniors' SSS members working on the publication, gaining board approval to sponsor future editions.  

December, 1995 Senior Peer Counsellors from James Bay join SSS Peer Counsellors.  

December, 1995 SSS offices move from Rose Manor to Fairfield Health Centre, 841 Fairfield Road.  

February, 1996 A Housing Search Companion is hired to support frail and handicapped seniors with housing needs.  

Fall, 1996 Seniors in Stitches forms for seniors to contribute knitted items to the community.  

April, 1997 Return to Health Program is initiated to offer social support to isolated seniors following a hospital stay.  

May, 1997 The first Walk with Wisdom, a seniors walk fundraiser, is held at the University of Victoria.  

Spring, 1998 The First Senior Link Newsletter is published.  

April, 1999 SSS offices move to Red Cross Building when the Fairfield Health Centre was demolished.  

May, 2001 Website is developed and Seniors' Services Directory becomes available online.  

June, 2001 Seniors Serving Seniors celebrates 20 years of service.
