Seniors' Link

The first goal of the society, in 1981, was to research the need for an Information & Referral Service for seniors. The research committee made a comprehensive survey of existing agencies in Victoria who were dealing with information for seniors and consulted organizations and individuals who were involved in any way with their interests and concerns. The committee found that while there were numerous government and other services available for seniors, the great majority of individuals were either unaware of these services or had difficulty making contact with them.

The Information & Referral Service for seniors was inaugurated in the summer of 1983 when a New Horizons grant was received to hire a coordinator and set up an office. Volunteers began the task of researching services and organizing information on a Cardex system. In 1995 the system became computerized and was concurrently renamed Seniors' Link.

Seniors' Link provides a one-stop, comprehensive, integrated information and referral service for seniors in the Greater Victoria Area. Approximately 3,500 inquiries are received each year.

Volunteers trained in listening skills provide information and referral to all of the non-medical emergency resources available in the region and support for everyday problems. They respond to calls Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and contribute 1,400 hours of service to the community each year.

This program has been funded since 1987 with core funding from BC Gaming Commission.
